Biography THE special honour of being his clubs first locally-produced rugby league international belonged to Cessnocks Dave Parkinson.
Parkinson, bearing the affectionate tag Dasher, was a surprise choice at full-back for the first Test against Great Britain after World War II.
By then he was in his third season at Balmain after four years in grade with Cessnock.
As Australia forced an 8-all draw with Gus Rismans men Parkinson earned praise for making several try-saving tackles.
He held his place for the second Test won 14-5 by the British and again wore the custodians jersey for the third Test.
But only seven minutes into the match he was dumped after passing the ball and suffered a leg fracture, courageously playing on despite the handicap.
With another Australian player sent off Great Britain clinched the series in a 20-7 win.
Parkinsons kicking skills in field play were highly valued by Balmain in a golden era for the Tigers.
He played in a 12-8 grand final win against Newtown in 1944, a 22-18 loss to Eastern Suburbs in the 1945 decider and, because of his Test match leg injury, missed the 13-12 win over St. George in 1946.
Parkinson was playing at Babinda (Q) in 1947 when Balmain again won the grand final 13-9 against Canterbury-Bankstown but he returned in 1948, when the Tigers lost the decider 8-5 to Western Suburbs.
Parkinson played at Parkes in 1949, then rejoined Cessnock for a premiership win in 1950 and further triumphs in 1954-55.
In 1954 he captained Newcastle in 11-10 and 28-22 wins against Great Britain
