He has represented New South Wales in 227 Tests, becoming one of only two bowlers to top the double century. A member of twelve Australian teams between 1972 and 1980, he has played on greens in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Rhodesia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, New Guinea and the United States. He made the singles semi-finals of the prestigious English Jack High tournament on two consecutive occasions.
Upon leaving his work as a motor mechanic, Salter opened a bowls retail outlet in 1980. A member of the Waratah Club since 1965, after an early stint at Speers Point, he joined Beresfield in 1988 as Newcastle's first Bowls Co-ordinator, a position he stills holds today. Including in Salter's long list of achievements are two Australian Fours Titles and a runner-up result in the same disipline.
A versatile sportsman, Salter excelled in numerous sports as a youngster. He reached representative status in boxing, swimming, diving, hockey and sailing before turning to bowls. His most successes came in boxing, winning fifty four of his fifty nine fights. Salter won a State Golden Gloves title as a light middleweight and made the National Finals of the Commonwealth (1958) and Olympic Games (1960) Team Trials.
